McMonagle shines again as St Mary’s reach Leinster Final

The young centre-forward scored 2-5 in total including all of St Mary’s first half scores, a total of 2-3.

Having seen off Athlone CC in the previous round, St Mary’s again faced Athlone opposition in the shape of Marist who came into the game off the back of a victory over Knockbeg College.

Played in Mullingar, Marist made the stronger start and lead by 0-3 to 0-1 after ten minutes before McMonagle scored the first of his goals to put St Mary’s into the lead for the first time after 13 minutes.

Marist were back on level terms by the 23rd minute but McMonagle struck again to put St Mary’s back into the lead at 2-2 to 0-5. McMonagle added another point before the break which was cancelled out by Marist to leave St Mary’s 2-3 to 0-6 ahead at the break.

Marist reduced the gap to one early in the second-half before Sean Moriarty became only the second St Mary’s player to score to put his side back into a two point lead.

The lead remained at two up to the 47th minute when Ruairi McNamee struck for what proved to be the killer blow when he fired home St Mary’s third goal.

Marist to their credit never gave up the fight and kicked four points in the closing minutes but St Mary’s almost matched them score for score kicking three further points to seal the win.

They now go on to face St Pat’s of Navan in the Leinster Final after the Meath school defeated Colaiste Eoin 1-8 to 1-7 in the other semi-final
