Fourteenth Offaly minor hurling crown for brilliant Kilcormac/Killoughey

JASON Studdart collected the FCA Cup as Kilcormac/Killoughey became Offaly minor hurling champions for the 14th occasion with a comprehensive 1-19 to 1-10 victory over Shinrone in the final at O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

K/K, managed by Eamon ‘Ned’ O’Connor, despite hurling against the elements led by 0-9 to 0-7 at half time. The reigning champions surged

0-15 to 0-10 clear when JP Cleary pulled a goal back for Shinrone, however, K/K showed their quality by hitting 1-4 to without reply before the long whistle to secure a resounding victory.

Kilcormac/Killoughey, defeated St Rynagh’s by 1-14 to 0-8 in last year’s MHC final and Shinrone in last year’s U-16 final, and after 43 minutes they led by 0-15 to 0-10 as Harley Dalzell, Shane Guinan and James Kilmartin dispatched some lovely points.

Shinrone, who were twice minor kingpins in 1951 & ’59, were given a life-line in the 47th minute. Damien Murphy’s lengthy free wasn’t cleared and JP Cleary lashed the sliotar first-time to the onion bag, 1-10 to 0-15.

Two fantastic Caoilfhionn Kiely converted long range frees regained the initiative for K/K and to embellish his storming display from centre back he landed a magnificent 70 metres point from play in the 58th minute, bringing his personal tally to 0-5.

Roger Deegan added another point and Peter Troy’s 61st minute goal simply put the icing on the cake.
