Electric Ireland Leinster GAA Minor Hurling Championship
Offaly 5-23

Carlow 2-10

At half-time Offaly were just a point ahead at 2-8 to 2-7 but in front of their home crowd in Birr, Offaly dominated the second-half outscoring their opponents by 3-15 to 0-3 with the assistance of the strong wind.

It didn’t look good for Offaly at the start as Carlow flew into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead with Jason Shinners finding the back of the net.

Crucially Offaly responded quickly and Colm Daly’s first goal got the home side back on an even keel. Soon after James Kilmartin struck for a second goal but Carlow stayed in touch with Conor Foley finding the back of the net.

Offaly were still ahead by a point at the break but they really came out strong after the break and goals from midfielder Donal Mahon, two more from Daly and a succession of points left them 5-13 to 2-7 ahead and the game was over as a contest.

Offaly will now play Dublin in Round 2 of the Leinster MHC on May 4. The loser of this tie will be involved in the quarter-finals on May 18 and the winner will progress to the Leinster semi-finals which are scheduled for June 22.
