BARRING any further withdrawls, Offaly’s Shane Lowry will be squaring off against Tiger Woods in the first round of the WGC Accenture World Matchplay Championships next week.
Ranked numnber 65 in the world, the Clara native made it into the field of 64 after Phil Mickelson decided he would not take part and that initially had Lowry chalked down to play his good friend and World Number 1 Rory McIlroy.
However last weekend’s winner in Pebble Beach, World Number 4 Brandt Snedeker, has also now withdrawn from the field meaning that Shane Lowry will currently World Number 2 Tiger Woods. If any other players chose not to take part, he could face former World Number 1 and current World Number 3 Luke Donald. The deadline for players to commit to the tournament is Friday.
Meanwhile the decision of Snedeker to withdraw also means that Graham McDowell and Padraig Harrington will not now face each other in the opening round.
The 2013 Accenture Match Play Championship will take place from February 20-24 at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona.
