THE Offaly Senior camogie team had a tough start to their second season in the top flight in the league as they lost heavily to All Ireland Champions Wexford in Enniscorthy.
Offaly went toe to toe with the home side in the opening quarter but two goals before half-time gave Wexford breathing space and they piled on the pressure after the break to run out comfortable winners.
Offaly were only just adrift thanks to the ever accurate free taking of Elaine Dermody. However after a strong showing in the initial phase goals from Fiona Kavanagh and Josie Dwyer gave Wexford the momentum and they never relinquished it for the rest of the game.
Leading 2-6 to 0-5 at the break, Wexford turned the screw in the second-half adding three further goals with Brid Gordon, Evelyn Quigley and Lenny Holohan all finding the target. Kate Kelly kept the scoreboard ticking over as she slotted over eight points on the day.
To their credit Offaly kept plugging away and they at least had the consolation of a late goal when Aoife kelly found the back of the Wexford net but it had not impact on the overall result.
New boss John Troy and his charges could not have faced a tougher test in their opening game of the campaign but their next game away to Clare on March 25 should be an eminently more winnable encounter.
After that they host Cork on April 8 before finishing the group stages of the league at home to Dublin on April 15.
