CLARIFICATION on the HSE’s future plans for the old Tullamore Hospital, now vacant for the last number of years, is being sought by Tullamore Town Council.

Cllr Brendan Killeavy proposed the motion that Tullamore Town Council call on the Health Service Executive to fully utilise the facilities at the old hospital in Tullamore. The Sinn Fein councillor pointed out that the old hospital has been “lying idle” for the last three to four years and noted that the old hospital still had two theatres, which he believed could be used for patients.

Pointing out that the HSE was currently paying substantial rents around the county with an empty building in Tullamore, Cllr. Killeavy added there was “huge savings there for the HSE”.

Cllr Molly Buckley had also put forward a similar motion at the monthly meeting. The Fine Gael councillor said this motion had been put down previously and she explained that she was trying re-iterated this issue. She believed that, perhaps, the old hospital could be used as a rehabilitation or step down facility as she wouldn’t like to see it all used for office space.

“The use of the old hospital is crucial,” she said, adding that “it’s shame that a building in good shape is being left idle”. She suggested writing to the Health Minister requesting information on what the plans are for the hospital.
