NOMINATIONS have been flooding into The Offaly Express for the inaugural Pub of the Year awards which will be launched shortly and which will celebrate the very best that the local pub and entertainment scene has to offer.
We all know the value of our local pub whether it be in the centre of town or in a rural part of the county the pub is still very much at the heart of the community. It is the place where you never know who you are going to meet, you can have the craic with local people and strangers alike, enjoy some great entertainment, watch your favourite sport, enjoy a delicious meal and, of course, savour a great pint. The Pub of the Year awards are designed to recognise these great venues.
There are 11 different award categories and the plan is that three finalists for each will be shortlisted from reader nominations and then readers will have the chance to vote by text for the bar or person they feel is most deserving of that particular category award. In total there can be as many as 36 finalists shortlisted but the reality is that many venues will be nominated in several categories - thereby reducing the number of actual finalists.
There is of course the supreme overall Pub of the Year award and all shortlisted venues are automatically entered for the top prize. Unlike the other awards this will not be decided purely by the public alone but will also include input from an adjudication team.
Certain to be hugely interesting also will be the Bar Person of the Year Award which received phenomenal interest when announced this week.
