BMW 640d Gran Coupe set to tak advantage of luxury car market growth

The luxury market in Ireland is showing growth, in fact it has been showing growth since 2010.

The luxury market in Ireland is showing growth, in fact it has been showing growth since 2010.

This has caused concern within the halls of power in Leinster House, they feel that these people who by fancy cars should pay more tax than someone who buys bargain bucket. Why? Begrudgery. ‘If I can’t have it I’m going to make sure no one else can have it either’ seems to be the attitude among the politicians. That’s why they are revising the very successful Co2 emissions tax system that we have now, because car makers such as BMW can get a 3ltr twin turbo monster engine into tax band C the man in power wants more hard earned money off the sweat of others.

Forget that the owner just paid over €120,000 for the car and that over half that has gone into Government coffers by way of VAT and the stupid VRT, they want more because car ownership is seen as a luxury.

Due to our dismal public transport system it’s not a luxury, it’s a right, it’s a freedom and no other car provides the level of freedom that the BMW 640 Gran Coupe gives. It’s whooshes everywhere, you don’t simply pull up somewhere, you arrive in style; you feel like a rock star getting out even if you’re just going to Dunnes Stores.

There’s nothing like the feeling of command, power and styling that’s in the 640, I might say that I think the new Gran Coupe is the best car that BMW currently make. It does come at a price though, it starts at €104,300 for the M Sport and just goes up from there but that is the only down side to the car.

The interior is nothing short of fantastic, there’s a real feeling of luxury and personal space. The big transmission tunnel has lots of storage mixed with functionality down to the iDrive and gear shifter being right at the fingertips. It is a 4+1 layout, that means you can comfortably fit 4 adults in but if you want to give a lift to someone you don’t like very much then you can squeeze them into the middle making them sit like John Wayne on a horse.

Lurking under the bonnet is a 3ltr twin turbo unit that puts out 313bhp which, in light of the size of the car, doesn’t seem like much but it’s how it puts that on the road. There is an enormous surge of power when you plant your foot and that surge is accompanied by a noise that beats any song on the radio. I know the sound is amplified through the speakers but I didn’t care, it’s still fantastic.

I’d love to own one, I think I might put a kidney up for sale just to get one. There are so few cars in this class that even come close to the experience but behind the wheel and the pride you feel just looking at the car. The Gran Coupe is available now and you’ll find it at Conlans BMW in Rathangan 045 524345, if you have the money you’ll have the drive of your life.
