THE all new Ford Ka models comes with an innovative Stop/Start technology that helps to save fuel and reduce emissions.

The Ka range, consisting of low emission diesel and petrol models under the Studio and Edge series badge, is Ford’s first model to feature this technology. The system effectively turns off the car’s engine once the car has remained immobile and in neutral for a period of 0.5 seconds.

Saves fuel, emissions

Once the driver depresses the clutch to move off, the engine automatically restarts, thus saving fuel and emissions that would have been used or emitted while the engine idled.

“For an excellent city car like our Ka, Stop/Start technology is a great feature to have as standard,” said Eddie Murphy, chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland.

“With the frequent stops that are inherent in city driving, the Stop/Start technology makes a great contribution to both fuel economy and the environmental performance of the vehicle”.

The Stop/Start feature can be turned off by the driver and there are certain circumstances where the system will not turn off the engine, for example, where the engine is cold or if the rear or front windscreen heater is on.

A Ka model that uses the Stop/Start technology can provide annual fuel savings of up to €350 for a vehicle with an average mileage of 10,000km in urban cycle (petrol model).

Annual savings

The annual fuel saving for a diesel model with an average mileage of 15,000km would be €275 (in urban cycle). In relation to CO2 emissions, the annual saving would be 200kg and 225kg respectively for the models mentioned above.

With the addition of the Start/Stop technology, the Ka range has also been streamlined to offer two popular series - Studio and Edge with a choice of 1.2 petrol or a 1.3 TDCi diesel engine, both with VRT Band A CO2 emissions of 115g/km and 109g/km.

The Ka Studio 1.2 petrol and Ka Studio 1.3 TDCi diesel retails from €11,115 and €12,900 respectively.
