Sampling the cream of BMWs

BMW 4 series coupe
Every year BMW bring their fleet of cars to Ireland so that the press can get a look at the new range and sometimes we get to do this before it goes on sale. Such is the new 4 series, I know what you’re thinking, the 4 series looks like a 3 series coupé and that’s because it replaces the coupé version.

Yes the 3 series coupé is gone in name but the 4 series replaces it. This makes no difference to how it goes, there’s the 420d, 428i and 435i available from launch. The sensible one to take from this list is the 420d because it’s an efficient diesel that will do everything you want albeit a little on the noisy side when you push it.

The 428i is just cream, there’s a noise when you accelerate that can be compared to the best sports cars and it’s matched by the performance because even I could get to 100kph in under 6 seconds. You can also opt for a 4wd version that BMW call X Drive, for €2,250 you can really get places for those people who don’t like RWD in the winter.

But of course this being Ireland you’ll go for the diesel and probably the 1995cc version, while there’s no harm in this it’s not the best version. Although the diesel is frugal returning a quoted 4.6ltrs per 100kms which is over 61mpg and that’s brilliant, I’ll be putting the fuel economy to the test when I test the car in full.

Other cars that BMW brought on the day included the mighty Z4 which is a 2 seat sports car, the styling has been improved as has the handling, it’s great fun to drive but all too brief at these test days. PThere was also a smattering of 5 series and 3 series including the GT version I’ll be testing soon.

BMW now have a very young line up of cars and some very fresh technology thrown into their cars. The 3 series is the current car of the year in Ireland and I’m sure BMW will get a good showing for this years contest.

There’s never been a better time to buy the BMW brand, they are so affordable and really well kitted out. Add to that, the engine line up is very economical and all of them are in the right tax band maybe it’s time you dropped in to a main BMW dealer and take one for a spin.
