The new Mercedes GLA is a very attractive new Crossover vehicle from the prestige German automaker.

It is a 5 door hatchback sharing much with the new A-Class but sits much higher on the road, offering greater ground clearance and of course is also available in 4 wheel drive, though the bulk of sales in Ireland will be 2 wheel drive. This week I am road testing the new GLA 200 CDI Urban.

The new GLA Class is just that, completely new! It looks fantastic, and is a real breath of fresh air. Its stunning lines will attract the younger buyers who may before have seen a Mercedes as a car driven by more mature owners. Not this one! It looks very much a Mercedes and its good looks set it out from many rivals. I like its slightly higher stance, bold broad wheel arches and distinctive style

The cabin is impressive. The new GLA Class boasts the latest in automotive technology and even has as standard an iPad type central screen for the cars multi media system which allows your smart phone to be extensively integrated into the car. Standard specification is excellent and includes, the usual electric windows and so forth but of more interest is the lovely light alloy wheels, twin rear tailpipes, auto lights, auto wipers, air conditioning, Aluminium roof rails, Auto Stop/Start,

Sports seats with integrated head restraints, leather multifunction steering wheel and gearshift, the aforementioned centrally mounted 17.8 cm screen which via the rotary controller activates a number of functions, such as the excellent audio system, with audio streaming, (with Aux and USB ports), trip computer, navigation (if fitted) and Bluetooth phone directory. Safety is to the fore with a host of airbags, ABS, EBD, Stability Control, Collision Prevention Assist (which warns the driver if you are about to collide with something), and Attention Assist.

Accomadation is also very good. Its a full four seater and will seat five adults at a bit of a squeeze. The electric open/close boot which is accessed via the large rear tailgate and has a beautiful chrome load sill guard, is a good size too however unfortunately no spare wheel not even a space saver. Just a compressor and tyre sealant. Not great for Ireland.

Powered by a 2143 cc four cylinder diesel which produces a healthy 136bhp and is mated in this case to a super 7-speed dual clutch transmission, the new GLA is a fine performer.

It proves a lively willing unit and is refined too. With just 119g of C02 emitted it costs just €200.00 to tax. Over my weeks test it proved very frugal too burning just 5.7 litres of diesel per 100km....excellent. The suspension set up is a very nice blend of comfort and sporty handling. The ride is very good over all road surfaces and yet drive it in a more “press on” manner reveals a car that handles in a balanced fashion. There is a bit more body roll than in say the lower riding A-Class but that never proves an issue.

There are a variety of models and specification packs to choose from. This is a stylish, beautifully built motorcar which has all the street cred that comes with the Mercedes badge wrapped up in a stylish 5-door hatchback shape. Prices start at €39,260 for the GLA 200 Urban Auto, the model inclued options such as a panoramic sunroof, Light and Sight, Reversing Camera, Easypack tailgate, Easypack fixing kit, costs €43,964.
