Strong support for ‘Yes’ vote
Following a meeting of over 300 IFA branch officers from the South Leinster area recently, IFA President John Bryan has welcomed the strong support for a YES vote in next month’s Referendum.
He said, “It is clear that our officers understand that a stable euro and Eurozone region is very important for exports and jobs and competitiveness issues such as low interest rates. The Stability Treaty will not resolve all the country’s financial problems, but the officers recognise that it is essential to remain at the heart of Europe in working towards a satisfactory outcome for the country’s future and for the next CAP budget.”
John Bryan said farmers were united in opposing the Ciolos proposals on CAP. “The Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney must toughen his stance in the negotiations and ensure the final outcome results in the minimum disruption at farm level and supports active productive farmers.”
The IFA President said as part of a wide-ranging discussion, genuine concern was expressed about product price volatility, particularly for milk and lamb. The inspection regime and animal health issues were also raised at the meeting.
John Bryan said Glanbia suppliers are eagerly awaiting announcements from the Board on decisions regarding dairy expansion and the future make-up of the business.
