Septic tanks public meetings in Daingean and Birr
BRIAN Stanley TD has organised two public meetings in Offaly on the proposed Septic Tanks legislation to allow the public participate in the debate and have their say.
He said, “Fine Gael and Labour have rammed the Septic Tanks Bill through the Dáil with only 8 out of 56 amendments being debated. This Bill will impose a €50 registration fee, an appeal fee, potentially thousands of euros in upgrade costs and up to €5,000 in fines for non-compliance.”
Deputy Stanley continued, “Minister Hogan is being deliberately vague on what standards the Regulations will be based on and has given no firm commitments on grant assistance for septic tank owners who require upgrades.
“The four weeks public consultation period announced by the Minister on the standards needs to be utilised and I encourage members of the public to come along to the meetings and have their say. Meetings are being held at 8pm on Thursday, February 9 in the County Arms Hotel, Birr and at 8pm on Friday, February 10 in Daingean Town Hall. All are welcome.”
Deputy Stanley concluded, “We need to protect our ground water but it must be done by assisting rural dwellers to comply with any legislation and not by criminalising them.”
