RTE interested in talking to farmer victims of metal theft

National broadcaster RTE have expressed interest in putting together an accurate picture of the extent of metal theft from farms, a type of crime recent labelled as ‘epidemic’ by ICMSA.

The people at Montrose are experiencing a little difficulty trying to get farmers and rural dwellers to come forward and identify themselves as being victims of this type of crime and they now realise that there are issues around ongoing concerns about safety.

Accordingly, ICMSA have offered to act as go-between and any farmers who have suffered this type of theft of metal and scrap can contact the Press Office at 061-314677 where the details of the theft will be handled in strict confidence and assessed for suitability for any potential programme.

ICMSA also guarantee that details will only be passed on to the RTE personnel after the express permission of the farmers or rural dwellers concerned has been obtained.

The President of ICMSA, John Comer, has asked farmers to contact his organisation and give details of the thefts. He commented, “there’s no doubt that the extent of this particular type of crime has been seriously underestimated and if the Government is to be persuaded to take the measures necessary to curb its spread into every parish and corner of the country then it will be necessary for farmers to be able to instance ‘chapter and verse’ of cases where metal has been stolen from farms.

“If we want Government action on this then we have to be able to cite real cases and convey the real extent. So pick up the phone and dial 061-314677 and ask to speak to the press office or email info@icmsa.ie”
