Ward Van Duffel, Managing Director of LEGO Education Europe who will speak at the forthcoming Atlantic Conference in Tullamore

THE Managing Director of LEGO Education Europe is to address the Atlantic Conference in Tullamore on March 29. LEGO is an iconic toy of which we all have fond memories from our childhood. The colourful bricks which have provided generations of fun to children all over the world are also a key tool in education and particularly science education today.

The Atlantic Conference 2012 will provide delegates with an opportunity to hear more about this as a speaker at the conference this year is Ward Van Duffel, Managing Director of LEGO Education Europe. Ward is committed to making a difference to children’s education, working with LEGO Education to engage 101 million students worldwide by 2020.

Ward states “we wish to contribute to the success of educators by offering unique tools that have proven effective at nurturing the creative-thinking, problem-solving and team-working skills of students in an active learning environment, thereby enabling children to develop the skills necessary for them to be able to embrace the challenges of the future in the 21st Century”.

Ward recognises the challenges that face LEGO Education Europe, “Every country offers its own education system, all enjoying varying curriculums within it”. However, his international experience and languages enable Ward and his multi-national team to get closer to the root of a country, to its individual culture and educational system. Prior to his position as Managing Director of LEGO Education Europe, Ward held a number of country management positions for the LEGO Group. He also developed and implemented LEGO’s consumer and customer strategies for five years, transforming the company in these countries. Before joining the LEGO Group he enjoyed 13 years of management experience with major international brands including Mars and Coca-Cola.

The Atlantic Conference 2012 is sponsored by leading communications company Ericsson. Michael Gallagher, Managing Director of Ericsson in Ireland also commented; “In Ericsson we’re very pleased to continue our support for the Conference. For us in the Technology sector generally, the 2012 Conference is an excellent opportunity to increase awareness and enthusiasm about the work we do and the careers we offer. We’re looking forward to it!”

Jackie Gorman, CEO of Atlantic Corridor commented; “we have some tremendous speakers at this year’s conference representing word-class brands such as LEGO, Audi and Sesame Street. I’m sure they will capture the imagination of all those who attend the conference. It’s all about how we can engage more people in science and technology, which is vital for growth and sustainability in our economy. We are pleased to be working with our conference sponsor Ericsson again on an exciting initiative such as this.”

Atlantic Conference 2012 takes place on March 29 in Tullamore. Other speakers include Leena Gade, Chief Racing Engineer for Audio Sport and Carol Lynn Parente, Producer of Sesame Street. The conference will explore how science and technology education is both developed and promote. More details are available on www.eventelephant.com/atlanticconference2012.
