LAOIS/OFFALY Friesian Breeders held their annual general meeting in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore recently.

The first item on the agenda was the AGM proper and that proceeded very smoothly with new members joining the committee and the officers returned to finish out their terms.

With the business end of the night concluded, the floor was given over to John Cooke from ABS Ireland. John is a specialist in the fields of cow fertility and cow nutrition. His reputation proceeds him and this was obvious by the crowd that arrived to hear what he had to say.

John’s message although technical was also very simple, cows must be fed to their potential or something has to give which inevitably leads to the cows health being compromised. This appears obvious but there are a lot of mixed messages being circulated and it was refreshing and reassuring to hear it come from such an eminent source.

There was a lively question and answer session afterwards and refreshments served which brought another successful meeting to a close.

The new committee will meet soon to plan out the year ahead. There will be three field evenings during the summer with a herds competition and a calf show for younger members thrown in for good measure.

The back end of the year sees events move indoors with winter meetings on topical interests (not exclusively around pedigree breeding).

If you are a dairy farmer anywhere in Laois or Offaly, you certainly know someone involved in the club, so if you are interested in becoming a member, you will not have to travel far to get informed. Alternatively keep an eye on local press for upcoming events.
