Innovative Glenisk bucks trend with National Business Award

KILLEIGH based organic food company Glenisk has scooped the overall SFA National Small Business Award 2010.

Announcing the winner at an awards ceremony in Trinity College Dublin, Dr Aidan O'Boyle, SFA chairman and chair of the judging panel described it as a fine example of an Irish family-owned com-pany with a com-mitment to organic farming that has managed through innovation and product development to grow their business even in the darkest recession.

"Glenisk is a true an inspiration to other small businesses," said Dr O'Boyle.

Glenisk has achieved impressive growth in market share of 23% in 2009. "We have bucked the trends in the over-all yoghurt category, which has declined by about 9%," said Gerard Cleary, Director, Glenisk.

Set up in 1986 by the late Jack Cleary, Glenisk remains a family-run operation, now producing around 10,000 tonnes of organic dairy products per annum and employs 30 people.

"When he passed away in 1995, the business was left to myself and four of my siblings. From then to now we've grown the business from about €150,000 turnover to a €12 million turnover," said Mr Cleary.

This is the sixth year of the SFA National Small Business Awards, which are organised by the Small Firms Association. As well as being the overall winner, the company also won the Food and Drink Award (up to 50 employees).
