AN ‘OPW Merit’ Award was presented to Clonmacnoise, which was collected by Manager Nicola Caulfield by Minister for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring at the prestigious CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence at a reception in the Westbury Hotel, Dublin.

This is the 21st year of the annual CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence, which recognise and celebrate excellence in all aspects of Irish tourism.

A number of hotels, B&Bs, entertainment venues and tourist destinations received awards across twelve categories ranging from Best Hotel Dinner and Accommodation to Best Tour Feature.

Award winners are chosen by the customers of CIE Tours International who have visited Ireland and provided feedback on their stay.

Mr Ring said he has been encouraged by the positive signs starting to emerge throughout the tourism sector. “With many overseas markets showing signs of recovery as well as a shift in the perception of Ireland as a good value destination – the tourism tide appears to be starting to turn. So, I would like to take this opportunity to compliment the work of CIE Tours International and their suppliers, which includes over 150 hotels in Ireland and 200 visitor attractions who promote tourism and Irish culture.”

The winners of the Awards of Excellence are chosen from an independent evaluation carried out by CIE Tours International customers. Over 30,000 questionnaires were completed by CIE passengers in 2010 and the awards are based on these results. In 2012, CIE Tours International will celebrate its 80th year in business.
