Fine Gael TD for Laois/Offaly, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, has expressed her regret at the news that local Birr business EJ, formerly Cavanagh Foundry, is downsizing its iron foundry with the potential loss of 32 jobs.

Deputy Corcoran Kennedy hopes that a solution can be found to protect the 32 employees who will be impacted by the proposed restructure.

“This is sad news for Birr if EJ does indeed close down its iron foundry. I understand that the company is currently engaging in a consultation process with employees.

“I have spoken to Minister Richard Bruton in the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and have highlighted the seriousness of the situation to him. Minister Bruton expressed his concerns and has requested an immediate report from the IDA.

“EJ has contributed greatly to the local community in Birr over the years and the impact of this closure will affect not just the employees involved, but the wider community as a whole. My thoughts are with those whose future with the company is uncertain. Birr, and the county of Offaly, has weathered the storm of the economic recession over the last number of years and I hope that a solution can be found.”
