45 events confirmed for ‘The Gathering’ in Offaly

A total of 45 events have been confirmed across Offaly during 2013 as part of The Gathering Festival.

Events will take place from March right through to November across Offaly ranging from a St Patrick’s Day Weekend Festival, to Parish Gatherings, to an Equinox Festival, to an American Festival in Moneygall.

The first event is the St. Patrick’s Day Weekend in Tullamore from March 16 to 18 which will see visitors from all over the world visiting and taking part in the celebrations. Tullamore is linked with Chandler, a town in Arizona, whose impressive 80 person band have been invited to perform at the weekend festival.

The weekend will include art exhibitions, drama performances, street performers and of course, the extremely popular parade.

Also in March, PricewaterhouseCoopers Players will present Peter Pan in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre.

In early April, Clara Musical Society’s annual production is also a Gathering event as is the Rhode Parish Gathering which runs from May 3 to May 6. During the festival Rhode will celebrate 50 years since ESB and Siemens opened the world’s largest Peat burning station and a gathering of all people home and abroad who were connected with the ESB will take place. Rhode GAA celebrate 125 years and are planning GAA events over the course of the day.

Events come thick and fast during the summer with many centering on the Grand Canal with two angling festivals at the start of June.

Annual events such as Fleadh Cheoil Uibh Fhaili, Tullamore Arts Festival, Shakefest, Catlepalooza, Durrow Pattern, Birr Vintage Week, The Daingean Festival, Tullamore Show and the Offline Film Festival all included in the list of events for The Gathering.

Speaking about the range of events , County Manager Pat Gallagher commented, “Offaly is delighted to have had such a range of interest in The Gathering from our communities, and congratulate all those who have been successful in their funding applications. Thanks also to the agencies and groups involved to date in the Steering Group for Offaly for The Gathering 2013 – chaired by Cllr Peter Ormond - and the work they have done so far with and for those groups in Offaly.”

Cllr Ormond remarked, “We hope to welcome a broad range of guests to the county during 2013, based both on Gathering events and the other tourism related activities that we can offer.”
