Tullamore Credit Union urges caution over Christmas debt

TULLAMORE Credit Union is urging its members not to overspend this year and avoid taking on expensive or unmanageable levels of debt in the run up to Christmas.

Speaking this week, Tony Flanagan, its Chairperson said the credit union has traditionally helped many local families at Christmas by providing loans at reasonable rates.

“We will continue to do so this year, but we urge people act sensibly and not over overspend, and, above all, be mindful that some other forms of borrowing can prove very expensive.

“We would recommend that members try to budget in advance and stick closely to their budget as possible. Christmas should be enjoyed, but should not lead to financial pressures for the rest of the year.”

Mr Flanagan encouraged members to remember the credit union is here to help them and urged any member who is under financial pressure to approach the credit union to avail of their free, confidential support programme.

“We can help and are working successfully with many members at present,” he added.
