The issue of flooding on the River Shannon and its hinter land has been taken up at European level with Ireland East MEP Mairead McGuinness. The matter was raised by Chairman of Offaly IFA Joe Parlon.
The last 10 days has been seen unprecedented levels of rainfall in the Midland Region with the Shannon Region suffering flooding on the callows. Mr Parlon said while progress has being made with OPW on maintenance drainage work, a lot more work needs to be done.
Mr Parlon stressed that the new CAP proposals would have a negative impact on farming in County Offaly and a 30% cut for greening and 2014 as a reference year would also decimate the beef and tillage sector in the country.
“Minister Coveney and the Government must reject the flat rate payment and make a special case for Ireland,” Mr Parlon concluded.
