First payments to sheep farmers

LIAM Aylward MEP, author of the European Parliament Report on the future of the lamb/sheep sector in the EU has welcomed the first payments to sheep farmers under the Grassland Sheep Scheme this week.

LIAM Aylward MEP, author of the European Parliament Report on the future of the lamb/sheep sector in the EU has welcomed the first payments to sheep farmers under the Grassland Sheep Scheme this week.

“The three year Grassland Sheep Scheme is worth €54 million to the industry overall and the payment of €18 million under the 2010 Scheme will be a welcome boost to the farmers,” commented Mr Aylward.

He added, “I campaigned at length at EU level and succeeded in getting unspent CAP funding allocated to assist this important industry.

“The commencement of payments this week represents the fruition of the work that myself, stakeholders and farmers put in at the EU level to strengthen the sheep sector and ensure that it remains viable and competitive into the future.”
