Fine Gael Offaly TD, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, has welcomed a timely Christmas boost for farmers as balancing payments under the Single Payment Scheme, worth €600 million, commenced on December 1st.
“These payments follow on from advance payments issued in September also worth in the region of €600 million. The Single Payment now forms an increasingly significant part of farmers’ annual income. Certainly, the first half of this year was a challenging one for the farming community which was hit by unseasonably adverse weather conditions.
“In the current economic climate, the Single Payment has become very important and farmers are more and more reliant on these payments to subsidise the running costs of their farms. Cash-flow is paramount for farmers, particularly those on low incomes, and the timing of these payments is extremely important.
“I also welcome Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney’s recent announcement that payments for 2013 under AEOS1, AEOS 2 and REPS 4 have commenced. Minister Coveney outlined that €50 million will issue to participants in the next week – this represents an initial 75% payment from the Department.
