Paul merges his previous qualifications in furniture design with his love for creating precious pieces of jewellery using materials such as walnut wood, bog oak and resin combined with sterling silver culminating in an item of jewellery that stands out from the rest. He fuses modern techniques and materials with traditional workmanship and principles to create simple, stylish, modern pieces of jewellery.
The Tullamore craftsman loves to work with contemporary design. That passion led him to study furniture design at GMIT Letterfrack and then to a job in the construction industry. However, the financial downturn saw Paul lose his job, an event he saw as an opportunity to re-invent himself. So, continuing to use the medium he always loved to work with, Paul set up his own company, Nine Design, and began designing a range of jewellery made from wood.
Designing and producing his pieces from a workshop just outside Tullamore, Paul initially used only wood but soon realised that adding colour to each piece was going to be what set it apart from other wood jewellery makers. Resin was the ideal material to use to achieve the designs he had in mind. Thus, Paul’s first complete range was born – stunningly simple wooden pendants, earrings and cuff links with coloured resin inlays.
Soon Paul wanted to diversify and looked into producing pieces using sterling silver, while maintaining his use of resin for splashes of colour. The result is another simple yet sleek and contemporary range which includes pendants, earrings, rings, bangles and cuff links.
