ORAN Molloy, born with a condition which saw him unable to stand or walk without assistance, is making a great recovery after a life changing operation to make his wish to walk come true.

The four year old, from Birr, suffers from a condition called Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy, meaning that the young boy can’t stand or walk with out assistance.

Earlier this month, he travelled to the USA with his mum, Deirdre before undergoing the major operation called a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy [SDR] on Valentine’s Day under the care of surgeon, Dr. Park. The major operation involved surgeons sectioning some of the sensory nerve fibres that come from the muscles and enter the spinal cord.

It has been over a year and a half since his family first contacted the USA hospital where the centre of Cerebral Palsy Spasticity is based to see if Oran would be a suitable candidate for the SDR procedure. This also marked the start of the mammoth task of fundraising the €50,000 for his operation as neither medical insurance or the HSE were in a position to contribute to the huge cost of the operation.

Oran is now well on the road to the recovery after he was discharged from hospital five days after the operation and is said to be doing well.

Mum, Deirdre, said that Oran is doing “just great, a little weak which is understandable after such a major operation but he really is making a great recovery”. She explained that Oran is now returning to the hospital every day for physiotherapy for the coming weeks.

The four year old was also due go a further procedure yesterday (Tuesday, February 28) but his mum, only expected him to be in hospital for a day or at most an overnight. A

s the good wishes continue from family and friends this week, the pair are hoping to return home on March 11 next where Oran will continue on his road to recovery.
