THERE was great local interest in the World Irish Dancing Championships held in CityWest, Dublin recently as one of the participants was Shannon Carroll from London, daughter of Pat and Ann Carroll who are both originally from Tullamore.

Shannon competed in the Under 11 Girls Championship and qualified for the recall having been placed in 35th position out of 127 champion dancers from around the world. One of the judges had her placed in 2nd position in her Light Reel. A late starter to Irish dancing, Shannon is showing great promise and is now regularly qualifying for major events. Shannon dances for the Lisa McCarthy School of Irish Dancing in North London and is the elder of identical twin girls of local girl Ann Carroll (nee Cuskelly).

She was cheered on by her grandparents Michael and Agnes Cuskelly of Arden View, Aunts Linda Bracken and Jacinta Cuskelly, and parents Ann and Pat Carroll. Originally from Tullamore Ann and Pat are now living in London. Shannon’s twin sister Sinead is also a keen sportsperson and plays Under 12 soccer for Watford Girls Centre of Excellence. There is a long tradition of Irish dancing in the Cuskelly family, Gran-aunt Lilly Hensey (nee Cuskelly) of O’Molloy Street was an All-Ireland Irish Dancing Champion in the 1950’s and a local teacher of Irish Dancing. Shannon will be back in Citywest in February 2012 to participate in the All-Ireland Championships and hopes to qualify for the 2012 World Championships to be held in Belfast in 2012.
