The Midland Youth Orchestra was formed in 2006 from the Lir Youth Orchestra based in the old schoolhouse in Kinnegad.
The orchestra goes from strength to strength under the baton of Musical Director Vincent Hunt, with the support of Shane Brennan Area Arts Officer with Westmeath VEC and the parents committee.
It is also supported by Sinead O’Reilly, Arts Officer, Offaly County Council and Catherine Kelly, Arts Officer, Westmeath County Council.
The Midland Youth Orchestra has members from Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Louth, Kildare, Laois, Roscommon and Longford. Talented young musicians from the midlands enjoy this opportunity as orchestra members to develop their potential both as musicians and as individuals.
The Orchestra played in the National Concert Hall Dublin on four occasions and performed in the Whitla Hall, Belfast as well as concerts in Clonmacnoise and the Dean Crowe theatre, Athlone. In 2008 the orchestra hosted the Jugend Sinfonie Orchestra from Bremen, Germany and the following year made a return trip to Germany.
The two orchestras combined to perform with over 120 musicians playing together, music being the common language.
