FOLLOWING a very successful pilot programme last January, Offaly Youth Theatre is back again for another year. Workshops have continued over the summer and it is now time to get busy again! This year workshops are being held in Banagher and Birr on Friday evenings and Tullamore on a Sunday afternoon.
Secondary school-going teenagers from all over the county have had a taste of Theatre and most are sticking with the fun weekly drama workshops, as they learn more through great activities, games and processes and develop their acting abilities in innovative ways! Classes are open to anyone aged 14 to 18.
Offaly Youth Theatre offers the opportunity to learn about acting, improvisation, developing characters, devising scripts and learning about stage craft. There will be two terms; October - December and January - April. Each term will be 10 weeks in duration with a final year show in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre next June/July. It is also hoped that this Youth Theatre will go on tour. Offaly Youth Theatre will also have the privilege of visiting other professional theatres and productions throughout the year.
The Facilitators are committed theatre professionals in Offaly; Anne Moloney, Macdara Deery and Angela Ryan, all of whom have a professional training and experience in all aspects of theatre development, from acting to directing to developing productions.
Tullamore Youth Theatre is meeting Sundays 4-5.30pm at Scoil Bhride. Birr Youth Theatre is meeting Fridays 7.30-9.00pm.
Places are still available, working towards end-of-year show Summer 2012 at Birr Theatre. Offaly Youth Theatre as a whole is in the process of being affiliated with N.A.Y.D. which will open even more doors for our young people.
This project is being supported by Offaly County Council and the Arts Council and the intention is for it to become a long term developmental theatre project for young people in the county.
