Offaly students Leah Buckley and Eimear Byrne have been recognised for their outstanding talent at the 2012 Leinster School of Music and Drama (LSMD) Excellence Awards which were held recently at Griffith College Dublin.
Leah was selected as the overall winner from the 15,000 students throughout the country who took the LSMD exams in 2012. She attends lessons with Lorraine Wynne in Tullamore and sang ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ at the awards ceremony. She was initially nominated for her performance in her Grade Five Musical Theatre exam having achieved the outstanding result of 95%.
Eimear was nominated for her performance in her Grade Three piano exam and performed the piece ‘Sea Pink’. She attends lessons with Sarah Condron.
Launched in 2004 to mark the school’s centenary year, the LSMD Excellence Awards is open to the 15,000 students throughout Ireland who took the school’s exams in 2012. The top 250 students who participated in the LSMD exams are chosen to compete in the Excellence Awards and finalists are chosen from this group to perform at the Excellence Awards Concert which takes place at Griffith College annually.
There is an Excellence Award for both ‘Music’ and ‘Speech & Drama’ with the winners in each category receiving a coveted trophy and cheque for €300.
Commenting on the awards, Karen Casey, manager of the Leinster School of Music and Drama at Griffith College, said; “This year’s Excellence Awards at Griffith College showcased the very best in talent across the areas of music and speech and drama.
“We are delighted to see these students and teachers recognised for their outstanding commitment to these disciplines and would like to wish them the very best of luck for the future in their chosen fields,” she concluded.
