THE number of people on the Live Register in Offaly increased slightly in February. At the end of the month there were 8,471 signing on compared to 8,423 at the end of January, an increase of just over half a percentage point.
While the figured increased in Birr and Edenderry, there was more positive news for Tullamore as the figures published last week by the Central Statistics Office showed a 1% drop month to month from 3,863 to 3,824. Birr recorded an increase of 40 to 2,263 with the figure in Edenderry escalating by 47 to 2,384.
However while the month on month movements were minimal, the annual increase in Offaly from the end of February 2009 to the end of February 2010 was in excess of 25% from 6,478 in 2009 to 8,471 in 2010.
The biggest increase was recorded in Birr (29%) where 1,497 males and 766 females make up the figure. Tullamore recorded and increase of 24% while the increase in Edenderry was 26%.
Of the 3,824 on the register in Tullamore, 2,624 are male and 1,200 are female while in Edenderry 1,659 men and 725 women are signing on.
