AN 87-year-old woman has died following a tragic fire at her home in Kilcormac on Sunday last. At 10.34am Birr Fire Brigade were alerted to a house fire at St Cormac's Park, Kilcormac.
The fire service arrived on the scene at 10:50am. On arrival at the scene Mrs Mary Flaherty, an 87 year old woman, had been removed from her dwelling.

Mrs Flaherty was removed from the scene by the ambulance service but was later pronounced dead.

The fire was confined to one room of the house and had been extinguished prior to the arrival of the fire brigade.

Mrs Flaherty, a native of Ferbane, was predeceased by her husband Jim and was a woman of quiet disposition.

Sincere sympathy is extended to her son Tom and daughters Marian and Anne, all of whom live in Kilcormac

The tragic death is certain to have an impact on the current debate in Offaly over the county's fire services.
