THE Offaly History Society kicks off Heritage Week on Monday, August 20 at 8pm in Bury Quay, Tullamore with a talk from an American Jew with a Russian surname and Offaly grandfather!

Robert Rovinsky, grandson of Tom Daly from Ballyduff in Ballinahown will reflect on the life of his grandfather who left Offaly in 1907 for the new world.

Tom Daly’s story is different in that it is a look at an emigrants experience which did not quite materialise into the American dream. None the less Tom is dearly remembered by his descendants in death.

Admission is free and all are very welcome.

Then on Thursday, August 23 the Society hosts a talk at 8pm in Bury Quay on the more unusual subject of “Marquees, Mineral Bars and Romance – remembering the Offaly Showbands.”

This illustrated event by Declan O’Connor will look back at the Offaly Showbands of the 60s & 70s.

Who remembers Jimmy Magee inventing a Dancing technique to accompany a Top 10 record from an Edenderry Showband? or “The Conquerors” originally formed in Birr.

Not to mention the many Offaly Showbands which became a matter of local pride and always tried to identify with their locality be it Tullamore, Birr, Edenderry, Clara or Ferbane. Again admission is free.

To finish Heritage Week the Society have organised a walking tour of Tullamore on Sunday, August 26 starting at the Town Park from 2.30pm and finishing up at the Offaly History Centre, Bury Quay with refreshments. Architect & Town Planner Fergal MacCabe and Michael Byrne of Offaly History will be your guides on this insightful tour of Tullamore’s past.
