Tips to boost your car’s efficiency

Spring is nearly on us and this is the time to do some jobs around your car as well as the house, so here are a few things that you can do yourself, they won’t take long and could save you lots of money in both fuel and servicing costs.

Bob Flavin

Clean and unload

Over winter we test to fire all sorts of stuff in the boot and back seat, blankets, jackets, sweet boxes and other sundries. Have a clear out, you’ll stop the smell of rotting food and lighten up the car which means you’ll save on fuel.

Check your fluids

No I don’t mean see if there’s any left over Christmas drink in the back of the cupboard, I mean get under the bonnet of the car. Coolant doesn’t just stop the car over heating; it also stops the water system from freezing so check the levels and top up with the correct fluid. If you can, check the break fluid and power steering fluid also. Check your drivers’ manual to find out the right fluid for your car.

Tyres

You would be surprised how many people don’t check their tyres for wear, this is vital to every safety aspect of driving. Tyres are the only contact your car has with the road so it’s very important that they are at the right pressure and good condition. There is an inflation chart on your car, usually around the drivers’ door or under the fuel cap. The correct pressure and thread depth will help with fuel economy too.

Servicing

Get your car serviced regularly, there are brilliant deals going for servicing at the moment. While your having the car serviced talk to the service manager about anything you think might be going wrong in the car, remember you know your car so if you think there’s a problem have it checked while your there and don’t expect them to find it.

Follow these simple steps and you’ll have many years of happy motoring!
