The first teaser images of the new mid-sized four door Fiat saloon have been released ahead of the Viaggio making its world debut at the Auto China show in Beijing on April 23.

The new four door saloon will be built on Fiat Group’s newest and most advanced architecture, the CUSW (Compact US Wide) platform, which is derived from the best-selling Alfa Romeo Giulietta’s underpinnings. CUSW debuted with the new Dodge Dart at the Dertroit Motor Show in January.

At 4,679mm long, 1,850mm wide and with a 2,708mm wheelbase, the Viaggio promises to be one of the roomiest cars in the C-segment. The Fiat Viaggio will also be the only vehicle in its class offered exclusively with turbo-charged engines. The 1.4 litre T-Jet unit will be available with 120hp or 150hp, mated either to a five speed manual or Fiat Powertrail Technology’s new DDCT dual-clutch transmission.

The Viaggio promises a curvaceous exterior design in strong proportions, with a contemporary Fiat face and rear tail lamps featuring LED lighting.

The new saloon, which was styled by Fiat’s Centro Stilo in Turin, will be known as both Viaggio (Voyage in Italian) and by its Chinese name, Fei Xiang, which translates as Flying.

The new Fiat Sedan, the first car produced in the new GAC-Fiat world class manufacturing plant in Changsha, Hunan province goes on sale in the third quarter of 2012. Fiat said the first cars will be built in July and will go on sale during the third quarter of the year.

While the Italian company has not yet made it official a Fiat source told Dow Jones Newswires that the Viaggio will also be exported to select European countries.

Also at the forthcoming Beijing International Motor Show, GAC-Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Maserati and Ferrari will jointly have a strong presence in Luxury Hall E4. The Luxury Hall E4 of the China International Exhibition Centre aims to offer Chinese customers the synthesis of the future and present of the Fiat-Chrysler group and its willingness to become a key player in the significant Chinese market.
