World War 1 book launched in Kilbeggan

AN enthusiastic and much-welcomed audience filled the lecture room of Kilbeggan Library last Wednesday for the launch of a book on Kilbeggan and its neighbourhood during World War 1.
Although Who Answered the Bugle Call?, a Kilbeggan Heritage Group publication, written by Ray Metters, is based mainly on the soldiers and citizens of Kilbeggan, the study is expanded to draw on samples from similar nearby small towns of Offaly and Westmeath. Indeed, the audience represented this wider appeal by even including visitors from Clonmel, Dublin and Galway.
Mary Farrell, the County Librarian for Westmeath and Gearoid O’Brien, Senior Executive Librarian for South and West Westmeath, generously hosted the event which was supported also by the library staff and members from the Civic Offices, Kilbeggan.
The event was introduced by local historians, Kitty Flynn and Stan McCormack and followed by a musical interlude linking familiar tunes to the battle fronts of the Great War.
This publication is a non-profit making enterprise supported by Westmeath Community Development Ltd. Any gains will be used to fund money back into the community.
