Tullamore author Mary Dunne's first novel Jamie and the Blue Stone will be launched next Monday May 14.

Tullamore photographer, drama producer and director Mary Dunne now has a new string to her bow - author.

Mary’s first book - Jamie and the Blue Stone has just been published by Original Writing Ltd and will be launched on Monday next, May 14 at 7.30pm in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore by Fergal McCabe with guest speaker Niall Sweeney, the former County Manager.

In this extraordinary tale of magical wonderlands and spectacular adventures, Mary Dunne introduces us to Jamie, an altogether unlikely hero.

A quiet boy of nine, who is sent reeling from a set of events that have left him living with his grandparents, with his mother missing and his father in prison. To top it all, he’s got a terrible secret to keep.

He knows – however bizarre and horrific it may seem – that his mother’s disappearance has something to do with a terrifying picture book in his possession. But how on earth can he rescue her?

Enter Percy (a particularly grumpy leprechaun) and Sam, (a brave if impulsive fairy). They have their own problems; somewhere, a human has accidentally stumbled across some magical artifacts that can offer access to another world.

Fairyland is still reeling from the last time this happened, 50 years ago. Things are serious. So, despite the fact that fairies and leprechauns never agree on anything at all – the pair form an alliance and set off in search of the human.

This is the story of the group’s incredible journey, of the trials and tribulations along the way. Above all, this is the story of a boy who will risk everything to get his mother back.

In Jamie and the Blue Stone, Mary Dunne creates a vivid and wonderful world that takes inspiration from Irish mythology and customs. Drawing comparison to the Chronicles of Narnia, her brilliantly evocative prose will capture the young as well as the young at heart.

Book Launch on May 14 in Bridge House Hotel at 7.30pm. Copies will be available from May 14 from Original Writing Ltd and local retailers.
