Sacred Heart TY students showcase their work

For the transition year students of Tullamore’s Sacred Heart School the evening of May 22 proved to be one of many highlights of a tremendous school year.
The students were delighted to showcase all of their hard work and to invite their parents and mentors to an end of year open night which commenced with the viewing of exhibitions which all the girls have worked very hard on for the last few weeks.
The exhibitions were of a wide variety and they all portray how much the girls have put into the year. It also shows the hard work and determination which has been widespread throughout this years transition year students.
From the YSI stand to the Social Etiquette stand the gym has never looked so well with all the colour and then there is the History stand, which showcased examples of project work such as “Heritage of my Town” and “My family’s History” from some of the TY girls.
Another project which had been worked on this year was the Eucharistic Congress documentary, footage of which was shown for the first time on the night.
Alongside all the certificates presented by Linda O’Brien the 26 Gaisce girls received their Gaisce medals and Gaisce pin.
The Gaisce award also known as the President’s Award is one of the most prestigious and respected awards for young people aged between 15 and 25. It was a real honour seeing twenty-six Sacred Heart students receiving the bronze award.
After admiring the exhibitions, guests were treated to a display of the student’s musical talents including an arrangement of cellos, guitars, violas, violins, flutes alongside other transition year students singing the song Mad World.
The girls also displayed some of the things they have learned from PE this year by doing two dances. At the start of the year not many people would have the confidence to get up in front of so many people and perform a dance but because of Transition Year they are all so much more confident.
All the girls commented about how they have gained confidence, friends and so much experience from the year.
Ms Hand (Programme co Co-ordinator) commented on the excellence portrayed by this group of girls. She also commented that the basis of transition year is on the vocational, social and academic development of the student.
