Birr outdoor active age park launched

BIRR Development Company, trading as Birr Leisure Centre, Health Service Executive, Offaly County Council and Birr Town Council have been working together over the past couple of months to provide a much needed Active Age Park.

The project has been funded and supported by Offaly Local Development Company, Offaly Sports Partnership and the Health Service Executive, Health Promotion Unit.

The facility provides equipment for use by adults that helps to improve fitness and mobility.

While much emphasis has been placed on the development of children’s playgrounds, this outdoor active age park is the first of its type in the county to provide recreational equipment to support physical activity by older people. It is also considered the first targeted recreational facility for older adults only in the Country.

The purpose of the project is to provide outdoor exercise equipment in the desultory setting of Camcor Park. Within walking distance of the centre of Birr Town, families can now access outdoor exercise for all members of the family age spectrum. This project will complement the already successful playground and skatepark in the area.

Examples of outdoor gym equipment are already in use across the country but the Camcor Park will be the first Active Age Park targeting the over 50 age group specifically. We also hope it will act as an attraction for Birr Town and draw people from the surrounding hinterland.

The Camcor Park is perfectly suited as the facility is commonly used for exercise and walking.

At the official launch on Friday last December 2, Sr Roberta stated “that this is an excellent facility and he acknowledged the excellent work of the management committee of Birr Swimming Pool for the commitment shown by them to this project which will help to enhance Birr”.

Cllr Noel Russell, Cathaoirleach Birr Town Council, also thanked the Council for allowing the structures to be built on the site of the Camcor Park.
